When November comes every year, there is something that makes my heart flutter.
It's the Memorial Day event that's being held at the Mugunghwa Love Group

The famous James Garden in Toronto has the Lee Sang-on Mugunghwa Garden, where 50 Mugunghwa

trees were planted in 2010.

I don't know how heartbreaking and exciting it is just to have Mugunghwa Garden in a famous park in Canada.

Every year, when Canada Memorial Day (November 11) comes, 516 ribbons are hung on Mugunghwa

trees to commemorate the souls of 516 Canadian soldiers who died in the Korean War.

Then you don't know how beautiful and touching the bright red ribbon flowers are.

It is also very pleasing to see Korean residents participate and wear ribbons.

Visitors who visit the park after seeing us like this are amazed and amazed by the event as an expression

of gratitude to the veterans of the Korean War, and they keep saying "thank you, thank you."

And there is a story that remains in my heart.

A Canadian middle-aged woman stood in front of the Mugunghwa Garden and started crying. She wasn't

just crying, she was just shaking her shoulders and crying. I asked her, "What's wrong?" She said, "My fathe

r died not long ago when he participated in the Korean War. I was grateful and reminded him of me."

When I heard it, I also shed tears with joy and gratitude.

I gave her a big hug, and I don't know how grateful she was to bring her mother the next year.

One more time, two grandmothers came to the front of the venue and said, "We are honoring the 516 souls

of Kadana soldiers who sacrificed in the Korean War," and they hugged me very tightly, saying, "Thank you,

thank you." It was a happy and happy moment.

One day, I was cleaning up the Memorial Day facilities when two passing women came up to me and asked,

"What are you doing?" and I said, "I put 516 ribbons on the table for Canadian veterans who were killed in the

Korean War, and I'm cleaning them up today." Thank you very much.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Memorial Day of the Mugunghwa Love Group.

I had to report it first if I wanted to do an event in the park, but it was difficult to notify in advance, and

I was very worried even if it came too far.

This is because if you gather more than 30 people, you have to get permission.

I don't know how much I've been worried about whether I'll be disallowed from the event. But I've been doing

it safely and now the park officials are happy and supportive.

But there was a time when I was very heartbroken.

In fact, many parks in Toronto have Mugunghwa Garden, which was all done by the feet of former chairman

Kim Byung-sun.

When it became known that Mugunghwa was the national flower of Korea, it became a big problem at the

Toronto Park Bureau and the discussion was held, so I was really heartbroken.

Although it is the national flower of Korea, it was considered fortunate to hear that Koreans tolerated it

as something they did personally.

In the second episode, I was scolded for sneaking out of my family campsite at dawn. I couldn't do the event

without it because I had the ribbon with me at the time. Even now, I still sweat when I think about it.

It's a small event, but it's attended by people from all walks of life, including the Korean president, members of

the National Assembly, the president of the senior citizens' association, the consulate, and Pyeongtong.

However, there was a disappointment.

Every year, only around 40 people participated, so I felt empty.

At least 70 people were recorded in the 14th episode, which made me happy, but I hope that more than 100 people,

500 people and 1,000 people will participate this year.

I pray with all my heart. Thank you for your participation and support.

Editor's note: The Memorial Day event of the Mugunghwa Love Group was scheduled to be held at the Mugunghwa

Garden in Itovico James Garden (99 Edenbridge Dr.) on the 10th, but it was canceled due to heavy snow and worsening

road conditions.

Third Hometown Toronto

Today is January 14th. This is the day I've changed a lot in my life.

It's the day it started.

It's the day I immigrated to Canada.

On January 14, 1977, at 10:00 PM, we left Gimpo Airport from Japan.

I transferred to Vancouver and then to Toronto.

I transferred and finally arrived in Toronto after a long journey.

What I can't forget about that day is that it's raining in Bencuver, but we arrived in Toronto.

Hani has a blizzard at minus 23 degrees Celsius. It's a very bad day.

That's what happened.

My family had to dress up at my brother's house in Victoria Park.

My immigrant life has begun.

Forty-six years have passed since then.

When I was 35 years old, I was 81 years old, and my daughter, who was 13 years old, was 59 years old.

My son, who was 9 years old, turned 55.

As soon as I came here, I went to Menpower School where I learned English.

I learned English for 6 months and received money every week.

This period was a very dreamlike time.

Soon after the Menpower School was over, I jumped into the life front.

First, I was a hotel cleaner for 6 months, and then I cleaned the dishes for 6 months.

With the help of my wife's money and neighbors, I started buying and operating sloppy shops in Young and Lawrence.

Since it started empty-handed, I was the only one who had a hard time.

They started to take their seats.

I found out about the  k b a  after running a store. I worked hard as a director for 15 years as a director.

The Korean Association also worked hard as a director for 20 years.

Furthermore, he participated in the Senior Golf Association, Buddhist Association, Mugunghwa Association , etc.

I engaged in active social activities.

Also, I've been working hard on internat activities, so I'm running 6 homepage.

The number of visits has now exceeded 7 million.

When i immigrated to Canada, i led my family with no special skills.

It was difficult to start immigration, but it was loved by many people.

I always enjoyed happiness beyond my means.

Also, I lived in a rewarding and overwhelming hope.

And I've been so attached to it for 46 years.

This place has become my hometown now.

This is my third home.

My first hometown is Kaesong, Gyeonggi-do, where I was born.

However, for me, i escaped to geasung  when I was 9 years old due to the Korean War, my hometown and my friend's face remain in a faint memory that I have no memory of.

My second hometown is Seoul.

The place where I met and settled with my brother, who had been wandering from place to place,

Jeonnong-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul.

Study resumed at the late age of 12 leaving school at the age of 19 and going to the construction site

The small shop that started wandering was a hard life, but I lived a very rewarding life in a small volunteer work.

My volunteer work was published in the media, my handwriting was elected, and it was a one-act play on TV.

When the 36th episode was aired in a row, I was so moved. 23 years.

Seoul is my second hometown.

We're working hard today with a heart that's pounding.

For tomorrow's beautiful immigration life.....

Thank you for supporting us to have a wonderful immigration life.

Like waves in the Mugunghwa Garden임정남 2022-11-20

Like waves in the Mugunghwa Garden

yim jungnam (member of the Mugunghwa Love Group)

Hankook Ilbo Canada ([email protected]) -- 14 Nov 2022 04:00 PM

If you ask me, "What's the biggest task of the year?" I will readily answer,

"It's the Mugunghwa Love Meeting Memorial Day event."
For me, Memorial Day events are very precious, rewarding, enjoyable, and giving hope and happiness.

This year, it was held in the 12th James Garden Sang-on Mugunghwa Garden.
Previously, I packed flowers and supplies at Dalasang and Supermarket while I was packing supplies at home, but I was happy and worried that my wife, who had never participated in the Memorial Day event, would participate this year. So I hurriedly bought flowers and wire and left home around 9:30.
When I arrived at the park, the chairman came first.

Every year, i have to report a park rally before the event, but when i look at the park, the park employee stands out and approaches i with a stuttering tone

"Memorial Day event is held every year at the Mugunghwa Love Gathering, and it is held today."
"It's a very good thing. “
"First, Nadine, who is in charge, is promoted to the Bureau of Management, and I'm Paul, who is in charge of temporary management."
"It's a pity that people don't seem to know that we enjoy freedom because of them who sacrificed their lives for our country.“
I was so happy and excited to see how kind you are to me even if I stutter because my English is short.

One event guide sign and two bouquets of flowers were placed in two hills and a large Taegeukgi was erected. Meanwhile, I saw some happy faces...
Hankook Ilbo President Kim Myung-kyu, Buddhist Association President Choi Jong-hak, Hanka Senior Association Chairman Lee Woo-hoon, Veterans Association Chairman Song Seung-bak, Writer Byun Eui-seop, Chairman Kim Geun-rae, and Elder Jung Jin-hong were all welcome and grateful.
At 11 o'clock, the ribbon began to hang. Divided into two teams, 516 red ribbons in honor of 516 Korean war victims hung from the branches of Mugunghwa trees. The ribbon flower was really beautiful.

Just looking at the flowers containing 516 souls that bloom in only one place in the world makes my heart race and my heart race.
After wearing the ribbon, we had a tea party with the food prepared by the chairman after a brief greeting from the chairman. I didn't know that many people would leave because they met after a long time.

People who visit the park look at it with strange eyes at first, but after knowing the story,
" "Thank you, thank you". I was so moved
In the meantime, there are things that I will not forget during the Memorial Day event.
A middle-aged Kennedy stood in front of Mugunghwa Garden and began to cry wildly. It's not just crying, it's just raising your shoulders and bawling.
I don't know what to say. "What's wrong with you?I asked him,

"My father participated in the Korean War, but he died not long ago.“
"I'm thankful and I thought of my father.“

When I heard the sound, I cried with joy and gratitude.
I hugged her for a moment. And she doesn't know how grateful she was to bring her mother the next year.

Once again, two grandmothers came to the venue and thought it was weird
"It's to honor the souls of 516 Canadians who survived the Korean War"
He gave me a big hug as he said "thank you, thank you"

I don't know how happy I was or how happy I was at that moment.
And one time, I was cleaning up the Memorial Day event facilities, and two women approached me and said, "What are you doing? When asked, "I put on 516 ribbons for the victims of the Canadian war who sacrificed themselves in the Korean War, but I'm cleaning them up today," the two women began to help out, repeating "Thank you, thank you." I was so grateful for them that I was so grateful.
In fact, it was during Chairman Kim Byung-sun that I started having such a wonderful, beautiful, and great meaningful event. Was it around July 2011? Chairman Kim Byung-sun asked me.
"Chairman Lim, how about holding a Memorial Day event with 516 ribbons on Memorial Day in Canada?"“
I was excited about the wonderful idea when I answered, "Okay."
"Then Chairman Lim makes a phrase for the event. I'll make a ribbon.“
In that way, Chairman Kim Byung-sun hurriedly made 516 ribbons, and the first Memorial Day event of the Mugunghwa Love Group began on Canadian Memorial Day in November 2011.

I really can't forget Chairman Kim Byung-sun who made such a great and wonderful event.
" Thank you, Chairman Kim. “

the fireworks

Feb. 20th 2003 The Fireworks Jimmy (Yonge Cigar)
May is exciting for me because there is the Victoria’s
day on May and the day’s sale is the largest in the
year so that May’s sale is also the largest in the year.
Even thought powder valued as 4500 dollars is
delivered to my store annually, it is not enough to sale
so that I buy 1000 dollars more by myself. I display
all the powder.
I pile up them at window, floor and shelf. Although it
takes long time to pile up,
I am glad and nice to see after finishing to pile up.
I think store such my store displaying the powder is
not common in Toronto or Ontario. Anyway manager
Kim of the Dominion store says to me that I am the
dominion’s customer in top 5. I can sale them just in
twice that are the Victoria’s day and the Dominion’s
day and I have to sale them during one week for
each day.
I’m not busy on the Dominion’s day so I don’t order
the powder and just sale rest of them.
After displaying them, we cannot be relieved.
I have to watch them carefully because children try
to steal them so many times and I worry about they
may fire them. After display, the powder is not sold
much at the beginning of sale,
however it starts getting be sold much with left 4 days.
The sale becomes the largest on Monday of the week.
At the time I start to be busy from the morning.
Usually one person buys them with 40~50 dollars and
someone buys them with 100~200 dollars. So our sale
is getting grow. My wife and I are all in a flurry and I’m
so exciting. When it is evening after busy time, I slowly
prepare to do fireworks. I steal much powder when my
wife is out. I pretend to take them a little bit at front my
wife. I go to park with the powder, drinks and chips.
There is a small park near by my store. Many people
watch the fireworks at there in every year. I place the
drinks and chips on the table and let anyone eat them
and then there are many children with having the drinks
and chips soon. I go to beach with the powder I brought
and fire them one by one. Then people around me cheer
and applaud. Someone gives me his powder.
I am so exciting even if I cannot distinguish whether I’m
pleased for their pleasure or my pleasure. I give children
some twinkle powder.
Then when I see that all children hold it, I can feel what a
beautiful scene. And then I hope I will do this fireworks
more wonderful and nice than now in next year.
When I say “See you again in next year” after finishing to
do fireworks, they applaud very much. This scene is so
wonderful and I’m so pleasing for this wonderful scene.
When I back I clean the table placed chips and put covers
of the powder into garbage bag. I go to my store again
and arrange to end. Then if time is almost 10 PM,
we check the whole day’s sale. We are surprised that our
day’s sale is over 5500 dollars. It is so surprising thing to
me because I sold so much powder just for one day and
we have sold them as value of over 9000 dollars. I go to
restaurant with wife, son, daughter and son in law. Today,
I smile with thinking the beautiful scene of fireworks.

the traffic control임정남 2022-02-19
the traffic control

Feb. 20th 2003 The Traffic Control Jimmy (Yonge Cigar) When we drive, we can often see that the traffic control signal’s power is gone or even if the power is on it doesn’t change with blink. At that time, we are anxiety and don’t know how to move each car because there are maybe some risk to clash among the cars by mistake. In addition to this, there is getting much traffic and this is too bad for busy people who don’t have much time. One day, I was frightened out of my wits at the traffic control signal on the Dufferin and North

Steeles. The traffic control signal was just blinking so that many cars had to repeat going and stop and it was taken so long time to get across. When I tried to go ahead because that was my turn, a car next to me came across at the same time so that I had to stop immediately. At that time, it sounded that a car clashed against my car. I immediately check my car how much damaged. Fortunately there was no damage. However the man who clashed against my car was my customer who came often to my store. I thought I’d to control the traffic and then I wanted to try it, but I was not brave so that I couldn’t do anything at that the moment. I was used to

regret why I couldn’t control the traffic at that time. Again I’d been met the broken traffic control signal on the Bathurst and Clark. My hart started biting suddenly. I thought I’d control the traffic but I was timid again. I hesitated with shyness for a while. I thought, however, “If I don’t do now, I’m going to regret a lot of things and I never get such this chance again. So I have to do this.” Finally the courage made me stop. I stopped my car near by sidewalk and then I went to center of the intersection. I sent stop signal to all four directions with

raising both my hand and then I again sent signal to move toward south. From that time the cars started to move easily. I moved fast my hand because there were too much traffic and I made cars move to north and south and then I sent stop signal with raising both hands so that cars could easily move to east and west. While they past me, they said to me “Thank you and thank you!” again and again. I don’t exactly how long I was there. Maybe it had been over 20 minutes since I started controlling the traffic. While any officers didn’t come until that time, I was warring about my wife was waiting for me. At that time, someone suggested that she would call officer

and I accepted that. I continued controlling the traffic. I think it was miracle that I did the control traffic very well without any practices and experiences before. I smiled with thinking I was better than any traffic policeman. When it had maybe been 30 minutes, a policeman came finally. However their first saying made me regrettable. They said to me “This is so dangerous!” instead of greeting. It seemed they were asking why I did such thing. But I didn’t care because many cars could save time and safely moved. I was very proud and

pleasured. After that time, I met again broken traffic control signal on the Alen and Sheppard. Alen Road is a semi highway so that there is always much traffic. In addition to this, the traffic signal on the road was broken so that many cars had to wait in row that was maybe over 2 km. First I exited the road and then I parked my car at a side street. I went to the intersection on which the traffic control signal was standing. As I did before, I sent stop sign to four directions and then made cars pass to north and south first. Although I made other cars pass to east and west as soon as possible, it took so long time because there were already many cars in row. I moved

my hand so fast for the car’s moving quickly that I was very tired. But I couldn’t quit it. I made many cars pass safely for 30 minutes. I could feel so good and worthwhile in proportion to many cars. From now, I’m sure that I can control traffic without hesitation whenever and wherever. When I think those days, I’m getting buoyant.

Feb. 20th 2003 Newspaper Delivery Jimmy (Yonge Cigar) I like reading Korean newspaper because my English skill is not good. I want to know news about here and homeland and I am anxious about behind stories of the day’s accidents and what the new happened. Then I’m so glad when I get newspaper. However, the newspaper delivered by mail often is late 2~3 days and sometime it is delivered after buying at

grocery so that I have to pay twice for it. Theses days I can feel comfortably and thanks for delivery every day. I ordered to stop the delivery and started to buy it at a grocery. However, sometime I had to wait for over 30 minutes to buy newspaper because newspaper was arrived lately and sometime when I often go in vain in spite of waiting for long time I was despondent. The Post service went on strike so the mail delivery was stopped in June 1991. At that time I thought how much our Koreans are concerned and waiting fop it as me. I thought “if I delivery newspaper to them they

will be so pleasured.” I imagined their pleasure and decided to delivery newspaper. I went to a newspaper company as soon as my wife came to store. I went to basement of the company because I visited first time so that I don’t know even where I was. There were some machines and newspapers plies so I could guess it may be print part or delivery part. I often saw some people, however, I couldn’t say anything because I was so nervous and shay. I just wandered and came out. But I couldn’t give up. I needed

courage. I decided to find an office again. When I came at the first time I couldn’t see sign, however, there was small door with office sign before going basement. I opened the door and then I came in. I said to a worker my regarding. The worker was so glad to hear from me and appreciated very much. Finally I started to delivery over 20 newspapers with map. At that time my arranged zone was from the Shapperd to the highway 7 & Dufferin. For the first delivery I was so confused to find houses and road

even if to find house is easy in Canada. Because I was busy to see sign and when I went to wrong way by mistake I had to wander so much. I found and went to wherever which were apartment, house, plaza and factory. The reader was so nice to see me. I felt lot of worthwhile with their pleasure. On the delivery I had some anxieties if I could meet one knew. Fortunately I couldn’t meet any one. However I found a

company’s name and address that were the one’s who is like my brother. I was confused a little bit. When he moved his company to new location I didn’t go and see him. I had to do. Until that time I never met him. So I hoped not to see him because I was so shame and sorry to him. When I arrived at the company with nervous there was no one and door was closed. It was so fortunate. When I put the newspaper into mailbox I smiled with thinking that I’m delivering his newspaper. The first day was taken long time for delivery newspaper because I awkward to find houses, but the

second and third day were easy. Someone may rebuke that I was doing for being reported on the newspaper. But I asked to them that I never be reported on the newspaper and I was worried that my wife would know about this. Fortunately I could finish without my wife’s knowing. After finishing the post service’s strike, I got a thanks letter and some money. I couldn’t them so I sent some gift things that I bought with more money for use of event.

spending a year

With spending a year; It’s been a month since New Year’s Day by the solar
calendar and it’s going to be New Year’s Day by the lunar calendar.
Accordingly it’s already the 2003 by the solar calendar but until now we are
living in the 2002 by the lunar calendar. I’m thinking about last the 2002
and make plan for this New Year coming. I think last year was specially
emotional and thoughtful for me. First, my age was 60 year-old in last year.
Second, it’s been 25 years since I immigrated to Canada. I ever told about my
three hopes through this reader’s column on last New Year’s Day. Those
hopes were writing book, my son’s marriage and Korean Association without debit
. Although I regret that I have nothing to accomplish the hopes until end of
this year, I can say that it was wonderful and emotional year for me. First of all,
it was the garden of Korean Association that was full with beauty. Even if it was
managed by me who don’t have experience and knowledge about gardening,
it was getting in full blossom and beautiful so that I couldn’t skip to see it even
for one day. I have also spent worthwhile time. I was participated in sale Korean
candy at the Caravan Festival and did a masked dance in a costume parade on
Easter Day. I helped to manage parking and guide visitor to Korean Hall during
the World Cup Soccer Series and again sold Korean candy at the Korean’s Day
Festival. When around my shop was flooded, I got rid of the obstacle that was
cause of the flood and then it was getting back to normal immediately. At that
time I was so pleased and satisfied to what I’d done. What a worthwhile and
wonderful year! I can also say that it was honorable year for me. I was selected
the one of 100 Koreans in the year and then awarded the Korean Prize. I never
forget the moment that was the best moment in my life when I was interviewed
at radio and newspaper. I met important guests from Munhwa Broadcasting
Station, Korea after my awarding the Korean Prize. They came to pick up my
life story and got my photograph taken for 3 days. The story was telecasted at
the Photo essay program from January 21st to January 22nd and now I can see
the program through Internet at anywhere and anytime. It makes me so happy
and honorable. In addition these, I did an important thing in last year. It was a
learning computer. Now I can use computer and Internet as well.
What a miraculous and exciting thing! I think last year was really beautiful,
worthwhile and honorable for me. It’s not exaggeration that it was the best year
in my life. I will go on continuingly and do my best in everything. I’m going to
make my homepage on the Internet, so that it can make anybody read my essay
and news, listen to radio, watch VOD, have time of meditation and so on…
. I’m so happy and exciting right now for these reasons. Thank you very much
for helping me these days and happy New Year!

Hope and Dream Jimmy (Yonge Cigar)임정남 2022-02-19

Oct. 18th 1995

Hope and Dream Jimmy (Yonge Cigar)

It’s almost been 19 years since I immigrated to here with my family.

I was living at around the Chunglyangri station,

Seoul and managed small store before immigrating.

At that time I had some annual events. The first was a memorial

service for lonely souls who nobody visited at the Mangwoori public

cemetery on the harvest festival.

The second was a party for children on every May 5th.

The last was a party for a respect-for-age group.

When we hear about the memorial service,

we usually think it has to be magnificent. However the memorial

service was not magnificent and hard for me. It was easy for me.

I just prepared some alcoholic drinks, fruits, rice cakes, other food

and incense for it. Even if the preparation for it was not important,

I was so pleasured and felt worthwhile after finishing it. At that time

, I wrote some sentence for the memorial service. It was that

“I’m worshiping for lonely souls who nobody visits on the harvest festival.

Please enjoy eating this food without hesitation.” I gave a party for

children’s pleasure even if it took place just once a year.

It took place at plaza of front village assembly hall. 500~600 children

participated in the party every year. Before immigrating, over 800 children

participated in the last party that was 8th party and it was very successful.

At that time every children had fun time with delicious food and various

events. Even many main adults in the society joined at the party.

I was used to be happy and pleasured when I see children’s laugh and

smile and heard resounding singing at that time.

I was sorry to old man after the children’s party,

so that I gave a party for a respect-for-age group. I started visiting to

each real estate agency which was a place old man usually gathered

in Korea with food and drinks. At the first time

, they couldn’t understand me. However when I told them that

“I’m visiting you because I want to gave you a party”,

they were so pleasured and praised me. Finally I realized that my

happiness came from their smile and laughing voice.

These stories won prizes three times on the national essay contest,

Korea. In addition to this, these stories was telecasted on TV and radio.

What a so honorable and pleasurable for me! When I was leaving

Korea with left such honor and worthwhile, I was so sorry and regretted.

However I thought I could find such worthwhile things and do

continuingly in Canada.

Although I have been here so long time with worthwhile,

I gave such parties for children and old man just once. So I had been

regretted and not happy. By chance I participated in Walkerten Event

from 9th to 13th event. When I marched as masked dancer representative

Korean with Korean folk music band on the Bloor St.,

I was so proud and excite because I think this my activity is like to let

everyone know about our unique culture. I think I finally found my lost

hope and have been happy because of the Walkerten Event. Last,

I think the Walkerten Event is a flower for harmony and growth of our

Korean immigrate society and a flower for our nation. I am look

forward and hope that more people and agencies will participate in

this event so this event is going to be larger and more meaningful event

than now in the future.

For my country임정남 2022-02-09

For my country

It has been 30 years since I arrived in Canada,

in 1977. My life in Canada in that time has been a very satisfying and

happy one. I also feel deep gratitude and pride for my mother land,

South Korea. It was a miracle that I was able to immigrate to Canada.

In 1976, my third attempt to immigrate to Canada was denied. Out of

desperation I sent a letter to the Canadian embassy in Seoul.

I wrote that my mother in Canada lived in tears because of me.

I told them how despite my small size and lack of education and skills

that I worked hard all my life. Every Children’s Day, I planned a party for

the children, organized and performed memorial services for the lonely

souls in a public cemetery, and build a rest room in a senior’s house.

I wrote how my story was broadcast as a radio series in 36 episodes of

20 min each.

I also informed them that I had received an award for being an exemplary

citizen many times. Moreover, I promised that even after my immigration

to Canada,

I would continue to do my good deeds as a good citizen of Canada as

I did in Korea.

Within a week, the Canadian embassy sent a notification for an interview

and my immigration to Canada was finally passed. It is impossible for me to

describe the happiness I felt at that moment and in 1977 on January 14th,

I finally arrived in Toronto, Canada. At the time of immigration we could

not bring anything,

so we had to start from scratch. My wife had to work in a toy factory, do

manual labour and catch earthworms for money. Fortunately for me,

I was granted an opportunity to study English for 6 months.

After working as a dishwasher and cleaner at a hotel, I was able to open

my own shop in November 1978. I took care of my customers with kindness

and heart and the business grew.

Meanwhile I tried my best to keep my promise to be a good citizen as a new

Canadian.

I had a party for the children in our village, helped with fireworks for the

Victoria Day celebration,

delivered newspapers during the postal strike and volunteered for traffic

control during a traffic light break down. I volunteered to sell Korean candies,

help with cleaning and planting and caring for flowers whenever we had

Korean Canadian Association events. I also performed a Korean traditional

masque dance for seniors every year.

I am proud to say that I worked hard for others in this society and made their

lives a bit easier and more pleasant.

Recently I had to close my store after 28 years. I had to vacate the place even

though two years remained on our contract since the building would undergo

renovations. So now I am working at a Korean grocery store as a general

helper but I am still a director of the Korean Canadian Association. During my

18 years of tenure I witnessed the growth of the association and promoted

friendships between Koreans, as well as an expanding Korean community.

I am also the president of a seniors’ golf club, encouraging senior Koreans to

come together. In addition, I maintain my website and blog that has had over

100000 visitors. I appreciate how happy and fulfilling my life is every day.

Canada gave such a good opportunity for me to have all this happiness,

hope and joy.

I promise to myself, once again, that I will always work hard to be a

good Canadian citizen.

I believe that by being a good citizen of Canada,

I show respect for my native country and repay what I learned in Korea.
